Spotlight Series #13 | Meet Designer Katarí Miylom

Hey there my lovelies,

Welcome back to my Blog and another Spotlight Series – I am loving these 🙂 are you?

I accidentally came across this picture from Katari’s facebook page and I was in love – ya’ll know how much I love camo right? So one like wp-1487772802782.jpglead to a comment that led to Katari replicating the dress for me and what can I say, LOVE LOVE LOVE IT 🙂 – more about that in another post 🙂

I also had a guts feeling on this girl, so I asked her if she would like to be featured of my little blog.  If you have a good memory, we had already came across this budding star during the New Designer’s show during Malta Fashion Week in 2015, Katari showcased some of her lovely designs from her brand Beyond Couture.  The collection was beautiful and got a lot of good feedback too!

Katari is a Slovak citizen with Hungarian nationality, studied architecture in Slovakia, Milano and Malta.  She lived in Malta for 4 and a half years.  Obviously, at the moment Katarí does not live in Malta so we could not physically meet but did correspond via Messenger and this is what I got out of her 🙂

So who iswp-1487324240809.jpg Katarí?
Well, Katarí is a part of my first name and my pret-a-porter fashion brand I have started. It is hard to define precisely, because at this point in time it is still naturally evolving.

Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?
Creating a piece makes me feel awesome, wearing it makes my client/model feel awesome. It is a multiplied means of non-verbal self-expression. Other than that, with no emotions included, the result is unique and practical.

My journey as a designer started naturally and I am still a ‘bud’. As a university student I developed my drawing skills and techniques, used to model, was a part-time assistant to a fashion photographer, I took up sewing lessons – many fashion related viewpoints. So my first big fashion project was to design a collection for Malta Fashion Week 2015 at the New Designer’s show (for more, see Beyond Couture). Since, I cannot stop creating.

What is your favourite part of being a fashion designer?
It’s the whole process from the first sketch on the paper to the last seam on the garment. The satisfaction is complete at that exciting moment when I see a true smile on her face. I feel that all the work was worth and appreciated.

What inspires your designs?
Anything and everything. Sometimes it is the colours of the nature, the seasons, sometimes someone wearing a garment on the street, pictures in magazines or online, sometimes it is a texture that I am trying to transform somehow in my mind. I also find the elements of the animal kingdom very stimulating.

How do you select the material you use?
I like to go for high-quality materials, if the budget allows to.

However, it really depends on the cut and the look I want to achieve. If we talk about dresses or evening wear, my preference would go to lighter, flowy and refined silky fabrics. If I want a bell skirt for winter, I would need to consider a heavier, stiffer and warmer fabric, of course. For an everyday ready-to-wear top or tunic, I would choose a comfortable kind, probably some stretchy knitwear.

What is the feeling of a finished piece?
It’s like the whole Universe stops for a second from the joyous blast I feel inside.

Indeed, I like to say that I underpromise and overdeliver. To me it means that I always go for more than first planned. Unless I absolutely LOVE the garment, I believe no-one else can.

What are your plans for the future?
Oh, my mind pictures BIIIIIG things.

You know, life is never according to plans, but I believe in myself and I am constantly pushing myself forward. The sure thing is that I love my little creative empire where I make myself and other people happy in my own little ways. So, as long as this is real, I keep that mind picturing.

It was such a great pleasure getting to know Katari, she is so sweet and I do hope we will get to see another collection of her’s.  As for the beautiful dress she replicated for me, will soon do an OOTD post (one which is long overdue) and you will get to see yourself 🙂

Until next time,
