The last standalone post from our trip in April is finally here. This one is all about our day visit to beautiful but sadly in our case rainy Venice! Nevertheless we tried to make the best of it 🙂
Venice or Venezia as it is called in Italian, has inspired artists and musicians for centuries, attracting them with its inimitable beauty. The reasons to visit Venice are endless, all you need is one excuse. Venice is a dreamy city of quaint alleyways, historical bridges, delectable cuisine, and on good days gondolas with the boatmen humming Italian melodies and an overall mystical air. A million lives live along the meandering canals.
This trip was a pre-booked one by Aviator and the booked coach was to pick us up at around 9 am at 10 minute walk from our Hotel Johnson bright and early.
This tour was booked via Viator and we were picked up as at 9am on Tuesday 23rd April -> destination Venice. The coach took around 3 hours 30 mins to arrive to Venice and sadly by this time the rain was really bad we really could not see much. From the coach terminal we head onto our boat which will take us to Venice centre.
Needless to say I was very happy to have been able to spend a few hours in Venice. Even in the rain there is perhaps no place as romantic and exceptional as Venice. It is still one of my favorite cities on my bucket-list and I say IS as I feel that just the few hours we had it really did not do it justice besides the fact that we were VERY limited as to what we could actually see properly due to the rain.
We then venture into the city with our tour guide where we could see all the gondala’s all resting next to each other as not many tourists were getting on them due to the rain.
In fact after our guide walked us through all the bridges including ‘Ponte de Sospiri’ and its eerie story, the whole group headed to lunch in order to be able to get out of the rain for a few hours. Our guided landed a good deal for us so we were all happy good food, get a chance to dry a bit and drink a couple of glasses of wine 🙂
After lunch we left our tour guide to make our own way around Venice. St. Mark’s Square or Piazza San Marco, is the main public square in Venice was the first spot we hit. It is home to the stunning St. Mark’s Basilica Church, Doge’s Palace, the Grand Canal. There are various tours once can take but in our case we did not do anything as time was limited however I did overhear one tour guide say that St. Mark’s Square was raised by SEVERAL inches since it gets completely flooded by water every couple of years?!
I have to say that Piazza San Marco‘s Renaissance Clock Tower is magnificent, with its 24-hour clockface/horoscope marker and two bronze figures who ring the bell at the top.
We continued roaming around until we arrived at the fabled Rialto Bridge, a Renaissance stone span lined by shops. We tried very hard to get a good classic Grand Canal shot.
The last thing on our itinerary for Venice was another boat trip. Venice is most well known for its central area made up 118 islands. But there are more parts of Venice that are worth a visit. We saw the four islands of Burano. Other islands, include Murano and Torcello.
The same boat that took us to the trip around the other island then took us back to the the coach terminal where the driver was waiting for us to take us back to Peschiera Del Garda.
I really enjoyed the day although because of the rain I did not get to see much and we were limited in what we could do I will be looking forward to coming back – hopefully very soon 🙂
