Why buying local Flowers is the best things right now! | Spotlight Series #25

Hey there my lovelies,

Welcome back to my Blog!

Today’s is a quite a different and special post for my Spotlight Series as it featured new and upcoming business Themaltaflorist who just after a mere few months on the market they have sore high locally with their beautiful local grown flowers so let’s get some facts out of the way.

You may be wondering why local flowers are any different than what you pick up at the supermarket. Stats show that, more than 80% of flowers purchased in general are grown overseas. Fact is that these flowers are raised with heavy use of dangerous pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Additionally, by the time you purchase them at the grocery store, they can be as much as a week old, meaning they often last just a couple of days in your home.

On the other hand buying local flowers, much like buying local food, is maqking a stand. By purchasing a bouquet from a local company, you are saying no to harsh chemicals, exploitative labour practices, carbon emissions from long-distance shipping, and to a flower industry that might be rather more about cheap less about quality.

There is no reason to ship flowers in from abroad, when we have cmpanies growing gorgeous blooms right here at home. Not to mention the fact that relying on imports means that your selection is limited to only the flowers that can handle shipping and being out of water for several days. Growing and buying flowers locally opens up a whole world of beautiful, delicate blooms that are not shipped.

Local flowers are a clean, beautiful, interesting, and long-lasting alternative to traditional flower sources. When you buy one of these bouquets, you know that the flowers were harvested recently, meaning they will last at least a week and likely much longer in the vase. You also need to know that they are also grown using sustainable practices: no dangerous residual chemicals used. These flowers are safe to bury your face in, and will have the kind of scent, color, and variety that you can’t find anywhere else.

I am proud to be a part of a new movement in Malta supporting sustainably grown, locally sourced, and seasonal flowers! To add to this I went step further and caught with Charles Zahra who is the owner and brainchild behind Themlataflorist and we got talking about his new business.

10. Do you grow organic or pesticide-free flowersor sustainably grown flower varieties?

Yes all our flowers are pesticide free. We do use coconut peat compost for some of the flowers instead of soil which does not make us organic. However all our practices are sustainable. We use water conservation practices and try and use the elements more than anything else. Our packaging is all from sustainable material including our new business cards being made from recycled paper.

11. When a client makes an order do you recommend based on the time of year/season, color palette, and budget ?

Yes we generally ask for the clients budget then we take it from there – our flowers are seasonal so we generally recommend the flowers we have in season but will cater for the clients taste in colors and variety.

12. If a client gives you a picture of a bouquet and/or centerpiece that they like, can you recreate it? Is it something you offer?

That is possible however many times that will include imported flowers as well – we can buy imported flowers but the price will of course reflect the flowers in the arrangement.

13. What tip you can give to preservation a bouquet for longer?

Keep as cool as possible -use cold water, change the water every 2 – 3 days, add sugar and bleach to the water, remove any leaves that will be below water level

14. Who is your ideal customer? (This is the person you want to work with over and over again.)

Clients who are open minded and like experimenting with style and color – we love doing something different and get most creative when the clients give us an open hand.

15. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

To finish off our high tech greenhouses for prodution of roses all year round and to start working with high end hotels.
